My Natural Family Planning Journey
I didn't know anything about Natural Family Planning until I heard Professor Janet Smith's "Contraception: Cracking the Myths" talk. Professor Smith describes the dangers of contraception for women and marriage. I discovered that contraception treats fertility as a disease while Natural Family Planning cherishes fertility as a gift. I knew NFP was for me, but had no idea where to start.
When engaged, I asked a friend which method she used. She started with Sympto-thermal, but switched to Creighton for achieving pregnancy. Creighton was easier for her to use, so she recommended it for both avoiding and achieving pregnancy. Austin and I attended an Introductory Session and entered the program. We used Creighton successfully to avoid pregnancy for 2 years, then to achieve pregnancy.
Before taking a pregnancy test, my NaPro doctor looked at my charts and determined my progesterone was likely low. We were going to do blood work and start routine progesterone when I had a positive pregnancy test! My doctor prescribed a low dosage of progesterone until the blood work came back. A few days later, the blood work indicated that I indeed needed progesterone. I am so thankful that my doctor could look at my chart and prescribe the progesterone my baby needed before the blood test results came in!
Whereas many methods of birth control have gynecological side effects, the Pope Paul VI Institute is researching how to use the Creighton Model to detect ovarian cancer, breast cancer and numerous other women's health issues in the earliest stages. This convinced me that all women of reproductive age should use Creighton.
After the birth of our daughter, I researched how to become a FertilityCare Practitioner. I am excited about empowering women to know their fertility and gynecologic health!!!
It is our current hope to have 4 kids, but we'll see where life leads us!
